Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda inaugurated the 5th batch of the Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP), known popularly as the Yuva Veer Course, at Chinmaya Vibhooti on June 21. This was the first official public function he attended after his coronary bypass surgery. The 50 young participants felt specially blessed as he handed over the text books to each one personally.
The camp on Upadesa Sara was held from June 24 to 30. The campers were overjoyed to participate in this first camp conducted by Pujya Guruji after his surgery. Speaking with his usual verve and vigour, he carried everyone to the heights of Self-enquiry as shown by Sri Ramana Maharshi. Swamini Vimalananda took a class every day on the practical aspects of puja, japa etc. Other acharyas handled the evening sessions.
Two major cultural programmes were organised by Chinmaya Naada Bindu on the 27th and 28th. The first day featured a colourful Odissi dance on Jatayu Moksha by Jhelum Paranjape, Daksha Mashruwala and Devi Basu, senior disciples of Pt. Kelucharan Mahapatra. On the next day, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, the flute maestro, presented a concert, accompanied by Pt. Bhawanishankar on the pakhawaj and Pt. Madan Mishra on the tabla. His disciple Himanshu Nanda, who is also one of the directors of Chinmaya Naada Bindu, provided subtle and sensitive support on the flute.
A 24-hour akhanda parayana of Sri Ramcharitmanas was arranged from the 29th morning to mark the 60th birthday of Pujya Guruji on June 30. Campers and many devotees who had gathered there for the special occasion participated in large numbers expressing their gratitude. Pujya Guruji took the lead at the parayana with periodical rests in between, when other acharyas took turns. Thus the night passed by and the parayana concluded by 10 a.m. the next morning with the final puja. Swami Purushottamananda felicitated Pujya Guruji on his birthday in a brief, but very moving speech that left hardly a dry eye among the audience. On behalf of Chinmaya Publications Marathi Vibhag, Acharya Varsha presented a swarna pushpa (golden flower), an image of Vamana Bhagavan in silver and the Marathi translation of the Bhagavatam (commentary by Guruji) in Hindi, while Acharya Vivek sang a song which he had specially composed for the occasion. Pujya Guruji was visibly moved and thanked everyone gathered there and also all those around the world whose good wishes and prayers were with him. His single sentence said it all, “You have made a talkative person like me speechless…”
Swami Shantananda, Swami Nikhilananda, Swami Swaroopananda, Swami Advaitananda, Swamini Amitananda, Swami Mitrananda, Swamini Amritananda, Swami Abhedananda and Swami Advayananda were among the galaxy of swamis and brahmacharis who had gathered to felicitate Pujya Guruji.
A very special gift from all the Chinmaya Mission centres worldwide was The Ah! Wisdom Book compiled by Nanki Singh. It is a collection of simple stories, anecdotes and conversations with Pujya Guruji gathered from many devotees. Through each one of them he passes on the deep wisdom of Vedanta. The cartoon character who represents Pujya Guruji gives the right touch of light humour that enlivens the book.
Chinmaya International Foundation had a list of new releases on this occasion. Pujya Guruji released the CIF Newsletter 2010, two new books – Sri Ramakrishna Charitam and Synthesis of Yoga, and the revised version of the Foundation Vedanta Course on the 28th and the revised Postal Sanskrit Course on the 29th.
Other major releases were: Logic of Spirituality by Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, a gift from Chinmaya Mission, Los Angeles; Adarsha Jivan by Swami Tejomayananda, from Chinmaya Mission, Minneapolis; Swara to Ishwara by Swami Tejomayananda from Chinmaya Naada Bindu.
Later, during the memorable lunch in the elegantly decorated Annashree, rajopachara was offered in the form of song and dance. Ramaa Bharadwaj, the dance director of Chinmaya Naada Bindu, presented a composition of Pujya Guruji in dance form, depicting beautifully his devotion to Pujya Gurudev.
After lunch, Pujya Guruji left for the Mumbai ashram where the students of the 14th Vedanta Course and many devotees were waiting eagerly to receive and honour him with special programmes. They gave him a royal reception with Vedic mantras and traditional music on the nadasvaram and thavil as he walked to Saraswati Nilayam for a special cultural programme by the students. The main item of the show was a play which culminated in a video showing Guruji's most endearing and inspiring qualities. Later, there was a special dinner bhiksha where the students entertained Guruji with rajopachara that included music, dance, bhajans and chanting from the Vedas, Puranas and Itihasas. The hall overflowed with hundreds of devotees who had come to have darshan on this special day.
