Things and beings…experiences and situations in life…
’cause’ joy or sorrow
Maintain equanimity
in the face of change.
Change is a constant. It is inevitable.
I. EQUANIMITY toward OBJECTS:
Every object is important and has a place.
Recognise…respect this…Do not accord undue value.
Objects cannot define you or your status…
Respect cannot be based on possessions.
II. EQUANIMITY IN EXPERIENCES:
Experiences are tagged ‘I like’ or ‘I don’t like’.
Our experiences are different at various levels:
body…heat/cold
mind…joy/sorrow
intellect…honour/dishonour
None can escape these ‘pairs of opposites’.
Equanimity comes by neutralising likes and dislikes.
When something comes…welcome it.
When it goes, don’t stop it. This is equanimity of Mind
Equanimity brings stability…halts the swing from elation to dejection.
III. EQUANIMITY IN RELATIONSHIPS:
People can be kind, rude, good, bad, sensitive, insensitive, friend, enemy, pleasant, unpleasant ….
Don’t agonise over why people are the way they are.
People have their nature.
Accept them as they are.
Then modulate your relationships appropriately.
He who remains of the same mind to one and all…excels.
Equanimity
with people…accept all
in experiences…maintain balance of mind and poise
with objects…know the object for what it is
