Chinmaya Yuva Kendra, or CHYK, is the global youth wing of Chinmaya Mission(ages 14-28 years). It aims to empower youth with vision, values, and dynamism for success in all fields, and helps them discover their hidden potential. CHYK conducts weekly classes where young people are made aware of their potential through the study of scriptures and numerous creative activities. CHYK organizes and executes various cultural, social, and spiritual programmes aimed at unfolding individual capacities and talents.
CHYK came into being in May 1975 as an offshoot of the weeklong teenagers' camp organized by Chinmaya Mission, Bangalore during a Geeta Gnana Yagna session. The sixty participating youngsters (ages 17 to 25) were inspired and formed the nucleus. This new venture into the delicate world of the volatile youth is the outcome of the sustained interest shown by a small number of inspired youngsters towards “Vedanta” as a Science of Personality Development and Human Potential that was pioneered and elucidated by Swami Chinmayananda.
What started as a small youth forum has now evolved into a global, dynamic, organized body that promotes personal spiritual unfoldment, varying social services, and integrated leadership skills. In the age of Google and Facebook, it is not easy to inspire young minds only through discourses in a classroom. For the past 35 years, CHYK has relentlessly strived to guide the youth by encouraging them through alternative ways of learning through travel, theatre, music, trekking and anything else that productively engages their restless minds. Spanning over 120 cities in four continents, CHYK has helped thousands of youth transform themselves and their world on multifarious levels.
